Surfing Vacation at Saint-Girons-Plage 2025

I haven’t looked forward to a vacation this much in a long time! Liz gifted me one week of surf school on my last birthday and now was finally the time. While Juli, Sam and Lukas came to this little village by bus with other surfers, Liz, Alina, Lazaro and I drove there by car. We split the way there into two around 7h long trips and spent one night at a B&B next to the highway (which resulted in a rather sleepless night).

While the bus travelers reached our destination early in the morning of the 5th of July, we finished our trip at around five in the afternoon. Liz organized a stay in a hut on the camping ground of „Camping Campéole Les Tourterelles“, a rather fancy and big camping ground right next to the beach. Even though we were super tired from driving all day, we had to go to the beach for a little bit to celebrate our arrival.

After getting some groceries at the local store we had a nice first dinner with everyone 🙂

The next day Lukas and I decided we wanted to get a little first surf impression and rented some boards and wetsuits and went to the beach. Sam gave us some instructions and together we paddled out and quickly realized how bad the conditions were. The current was insanely strong and it was super windy. Lukas and I were mostly just paddling around trying not to get driven away. It was insanely exhausting and after a short while during which we didn’t catch any waves, we went back to the shore. Lukas and I were dead. We literally just laid down, had brutal head aches and just didn’t move for the next 15 minutes or so (in which Sam did actually catch some waves!).

But Lukas and I were completely exhausted and so we went back to the camping ground and basically just rested for a couple hours before wandering around the camp site a little more in the evening with everyone. What a day… we hoped that surf school would be a different experience.

Luckily it was! From Monday to Friday we had two hours of surf school from around 10:45 to 12:45 but that heavily depends on the tides. For example on Friday we started at 12:45 and finished at 14:45. Garett our surf teacher from MAX RESPECT was really nice and gave us a little bit of theory lessons at the beach first, before we went into the water. The way he explained everything was very figuratively as he used the sand to build miniature waves and show us how to catch a wave, rise on the board and finally surf the wave left or right. Obviously there is more to it, but describing everything in detail would take way too long! While in the first days we mostly surfed whitewash, towards the end of the week we already started to surf green waves which was amazing!

As surf school was „only“ two hours a day (trust me that’s enough in the beginning), we also had time to enjoy other things on the camp site like an archery workshop, eating delicious burgers, building sand castles on the beach and enjoying beautiful sunsets and evenings :). And of course playing TETRIS together on our Nintendo DS :D. It really was a week full of awesomeness!

It was so much fun and I hope we’ll go on another surf adventure again! <3
